When it comes to marketing your business, you have plenty of options. From social media platforms to paid advertising, the world is your oyster as they say. But there is one marketing method that stands out above the rest and that’s blogging.
Now, most business owners skip over blogging and focus all of their attention on social media. So in this article, I want to talk about why blogging is important and why you should hop on the blog wagon asap.

Many small business owners see blogging as a waste of time. But blogging, when done right, has several benefits for your business and your revenue.
For starters, not many business owners are doing it so this is the perfect opportunity to jump in and stand out from the rest.
Plus, when you pair blogging with SEO, you’ll start to show up in search results for your desired keywords, ultimately bringing you more traffic and exposing your business to more potential clients.
Here are seven more reasons why you should start a blog for your business.
1. You Own Your Content
Possibly the most important reason of them all. Remember that your social media platforms are not owned by you. They’re owned by the respective social media network. This means that at any moment, they can shut down your profile and your content can disappear.
Your blog on the other hand? You own that. It’s yours. You’re free to export it to another platform, publish it however often you want, edit it however you want, and have full control over it.
2. Your Blog Posts Are Searchable
When you need a new fridge for your kitchen, where do you go first? That’s right — you turn to Google. Your search will show you not only relevant products and shop pages but also articles talking about the best fridges.
Just like those articles, your blog posts get indexed by the search engines which means they can show up as a result for relevant keywords. And while you can search Facebook groups to a degree, let’s face it: most of us go to Google when in research and buying mode and not Facebook or Instagram.
3. Your Blog Posts Live Longer
An average social media post has a lifespan of a few hours. But once your blog posts get indexed by the search engines, they can continue to bring you traffic for months and even years after you’ve published them.
Case in point: one of my most popular blog posts was written in 2018. To this day, it brings me traffic on a daily basis and helps me grow my email list which brings me to my next point.

Your blog posts are the prime opportunity to include a relevant lead magnet opt-in form. The more blog posts you have, the more opportunities to include that opt-in and invite readers to get more of your juicy content.
You can get super granular with this if you create a lead magnet that’s directly related to the blog post in question. Let’s say you publish a blog post on the benefits of meditation. Add an opt-in that allows them to download a guided meditation in exchange for their email address and watch your email list grow.

5. Blogging Boosts Your Traffic
Search engines love websites that are regularly updated with fresh content. Each new blog post you publish is another piece of content for the search engines to index. And the more posts you publish, the more traffic you can get.
According to HubSpot, companies that publish 16+ pieces of content, saw a huge increase in traffic as well as the number of leads they received.
Now, I’m not saying that you should blog every day. Obviously, since we’re small business owners, we don’t have the bandwidth to churn out a new blog post every day.
What’s more important is that you find a publishing schedule you can commit to and stick with it. If that means publishing one blog post every (other) week, then so be it. But do so consistently and pretty soon, you’ll see an increase in traffic.
6. Blogging Builds Trust
Blogging is the perfect way to show your expertise and knowledge on a particular topic. It’s also a great way to show the human side behind your business and sprinkle a little bit of your personality into every blog post you write.
Those two things combined are a powerful way to build trust in your visitors and readers. And once someone trusts you, they’ll be more likely to buy from you.

7. You Don’t Have To Spend Money On Ads
Lastly, since blogging is bringing you organic traffic, you don’t have to spend money on ads to bring people to your website. What’s even better is that organic traffic is already interested in what you have to offer since they’re searching for that particular thing.
They’ll be more likely to check out more pages on your site and sign up for your thing because it’s what they’ve been looking for. With paid traffic coming from social media, remember that they are on Facebook or Instagram looking to connect with others and get their daily dose of entertainment.
It might be harder to get them to click through and if they do, they might only be after the free thing and not really interested in the rest of your offer.
Final Thoughts
Blogging has several benefits and it doesn’t have to take up a lot of your time. You can start off with one post per week or even one post every two weeks. What matters more is to commit to it and show up consistently with great value for your readers.
