How to Connect MailerLite With Squarespace (Updated for 2022)

Important note: MailerLite released a new version of their platform in 2022. The new version doesn’t have a straightforward integration with Squarespace as of yet. I’ve updated the post with the new video that includes information for connecting the new version of MailerLite with Squarespace.

If you’ve been using Squarespace for a while, you might know that Squarespace has newsletter sign up forms and that it integrates with Mailchimp.

But Mailchimp can be confusing to use, not to mention their free plan is very limiting.

And while Squarespace does offer Email Campaigns as their own email marketing platforms, the features are rather simplistic.

Luckily, there’s another awesome email marketing platform out there. I’m talking about MailerLite and in today’s video, I’ll show you how to connect MailerLite with Squarespace.

But first, what does MailerLite offer and why should you use it?

MailerLite is an easy to use email marketing platform that makes it easy to send newsletters or email campaigns to your subscribers.

It comes with its own sign up forms and they can be displayed on your site in several ways:

  • inline

  • as a popup (including exit-intent popup)

  • as a slide out

  • as a bottom bar

  • or as a full-page overlay

It has a free plan for up to 1000 subscribers and it offers automations which means you can easily set up a welcome sequence that goes out to everyone who signs up for your email list.

A few other notable features include:

  • You can organize your subscribers into groups based on the freebie they sign up for

  • You can create segments from your existing subscribers

  • Drag and drop email editor with awesome blocks such as buttons, surveys, countdown timers, and more

  • You can create regular and automated campaigns and you can even create A/B split campaigns

In addition to that, it integrates with Squarespace which means you can use Squarespace newsletter form to grow your list and everyone who signs up will automatically be added to your MailerLite list.

So with that out of the way, let’s take a look at how you can connect MailerLite with Squarespace.

How to Connect MailerLite Classic with Squarespace

Video Transcript: MailerLite Classic And Squarespace Integration Tutorial

Hey guys, in today's tutorial I want to show you how you can connect MailerLite or integrate MailerLite with your Squarespace website.

So for those of you who don't know MailerLite is basically a great email program or email marketing platform that offers a free plan for up to 1000 subscribers, and it allows for automations even on the free plan which is a lot better than what MailChimp offers on their free plan.

And basically the reason why I like MailerLite is because they don't limit how many automations you can have and they don't count your subscribers as if you have, for example if one person signs up for your email list twice they won't count that as a duplicate subscriber whereas MailChimp will.

And you can only create one list with MailChimp, or one audience with MailChimp, versus in MailerLite you can create; you have one main list but you can create different groups of your subscribers so that you can send more targeted emails.

And it's my favorite marketing platform. And it's the one I use for my newsletters, and my signup forms, so if you want to use MailerLite as well; this is how you can integrate it with Squarespace.

So the first thing you're going to need to do is you're going to go to your... will sign up for a MailerLite account.

And then under 'Integrations', here you're going to click here where it says Squarespace, click on 'Use'.

Turn the 'Integration status' to 'On', and you're going to want to select a default group for all your subscribers that will basically be funneled into when they subscribe to you on your Squarespace website. And then you're going to click 'Save'.

And then MailerLite will give you a JavaScript snippet that you're going to select all and press copy, and then you're going to go to your Squarespace website under Settings -> Advanced -> Code Injection, and in the Header, you're going to paste that code. And then you're going to click on 'Save'.

And once that's done as you can see, I have a pop-up made in MailerLite. And as soon as I've integrated that, it basically shows up on my Squarespace website.

So that's a sign that the integration is working now.

But the next thing you need to do is you can use MailerLite's forms in your website, but, you can also use Squarespace built-in newsletter forms for people to sign up to your email list.

So the way you're going to set this up is you're going to go to a page where you have course space newsletter form, for example, like I have it right here.

And what you're going to do is under the 'Storage' settings.

You're, first of all you're going to give your form a distinctive name. So I'm going to name it like Homepage Top Opt-In, or you can name it by whatever you're offering as the incentive.

And then you can configure it however you like, but, here under the Storage tab; you're going to uncheck 'Email Campaigns' and you're going to click Other Services -> Google Drive and then you're going to authorize your Google account.

Connecting with my account, and click here on 'Allow', and now you're basically need to give your spreadsheet a name where all the people who sign up for their information will be stored in that spreadsheet.

So we're just going to name it the same as our form Homepage Top Opt-In Free Travel Guide as an example, and then you're going to click on 'Apply'.

And then you're going to click on 'Done', and as soon as that's done, and once that is signed up; we are going to check to make sure that it works.

So I'm just going to check this in incognito mode. So there's the pop-up, it's showing up. And now we're going to enter the email address, if the integration was correct we should see our subscriber in the group that we just created. And as you can see I already have there's the email that I entered and the integration works as intended.

And that's basically how you can use Squarespace newsletter forms with MailerLight and integrate MailerLite with Squarespace.

How to Connect New MailerLite With Squarespace in 2022

In last week's video I talked about the newest version of MailerLite that recently came out, I also mentioned in that previous video that there seems to be no native integration between MailerLite in Squarespace like there is in MailerLite Classic.

Now that might seem like a bummer and I'll admit it is but; me being who I am, I went through the rabbit hole to find the solution. And I'm happy to report that I did. All you really have to do is use Zapier.

So in this week's tutorial I'll show you how you can integrate the new version of MailerLite with Squarespace.

Step 1: Prepare Google Sheet

Okay, so the first thing that you are going to need to do before you even get started with creating this zap, you are going to need a Google sheet, and it will need to be formatted a specific way.

So what's important here is that you have the header row, and you want to capture the first name, last name, and email address and then you need to delete the rest of the rows that populate the sheet. I forgot to mention in the video but be sure to add at least one entry in your spreadsheet so Zapier can pull that information for testing purposes in the next step.

Step 2: Create The Zap

Then you're going to want to come over here to Zapier. If you don't have an account, you’ll have to create one. There is a free plan that you can use which gives you 5 zaps and 100 tasks. Once you’ve created your account, you need to set up your trigger.

In this case, the trigger is going to be Google Sheets. You want to select the trigger event to be a new spreadsheet row, and then click continue. You’ll need to connect your Google Sheets account and choose the spreadsheet from the previous step. Zapier will then test the trigger to make sure it works correctly.

Step 3: Add The Action Step

Now we're going to add an action step, and for that we need MailerLite. You want to make sure to select MailerLite and not MailerLite classic for the action event. Click create or update subscribers for the action and click continue. Then you're going to have to sign in to your MailerLite account and authorize the connection.

Next, choose a subscriber group. Now comes the fun part. Now we get to tell Zapier which information should be sent to your MailerLite account and for that, we’ll pull the information from the spreadsheet.

So I'm just going to select email address. Then here, you can for the last name; you can enter the last name. For the name, you can enter the first name; and map the fields like that.

Click continue, and now Zapier will basically ask you to test the connection. So I'm going to click test and continue, and it's telling me that a subscriber was sent to MailerLite just now; and we can check this really quickly. If I go to the MailerLite new version, you can see that I've just gained one new subscriber, and that is the subscriber that I just sent there as a test. So that tells us that the zap is working.

Then you can basically turn on the zap, you can give it a name, turn it on, and then the zap will be active. So I'm just going to quickly rename this: New Squarespace Subscribers to MailerLite; like that.

Step 4: Configure Your Squarespace Form

Then the last step that we need to do is you're going to go to your Squarespace website; and I'm here over on one of my demo sites. So what we're going to do here is, I'm going to click edit and then I'm going to edit this newsletter form that I have right here. I'm going to give it a name that tells me what it is. I'm going to say require name field, and under design; I'm going to leave it as float, and under storage; I'm going to disable the Squarespace email campaigns.

I'm going to disconnect that, and I'm going to choose other storage options. Then I'm going to click connect on Google Drive, and I'm going to sign in to the account. Once that's connected, for the spreadsheet name; I'm going to choose the spreadsheet name that we used in the zap.

Then I'm going to click back, and I'm going to click save. Then I'm going to pull up an incognito tab to make sure that this works, and I'm going to enter my information and I'm going to click sign up.

Let's see if we have a new subscriber in our MailerLite account. As you can see, once we refresh the page, the subscriber is in here.

So that is basically it for the tutorial. That is how you can do it.

Why Use Google Sheets And Not Native Squarespace And Zapier Integration?

If you were to go to create this zap for every Squarespace form that uses Zapier to pull Squarespace forms; then each new form would require a new zap to be connected, and you would run out of zaps pretty quickly.

With this, you can basically create a ton of different forms but point them to the same spreadsheet, and that requires only one zap to be active instead of having 10 different zaps for 10 different forms.

Now if you have multiple freebies that you're offering, then what I would recommend to do is to create a separate spreadsheet for each freebie that you have to offer in the same way that I showed you for this particular walkthrough. Then just connect the correct spreadsheets and reduplicate this zap using the same setup; and make sure that you point the Squarespace form to the correct spreadsheet.
