7 Tips to Make Your Website Sound More Like You

Writing website copy is probably the hardest part of building a website. On one hand, you want to sound professional and trustworthy. On the other hand, you don’t want to sound too corporate and make your website sound like a complete snooze fest.

And… you also don’t want to go in the opposite direction and sound so casual and chill that nobody takes you seriously.

So what’s a girl to do then? Well, lucky for you I have a few tips and tricks that will help you write website copy that will sound more like you while still making your ideal clients feel understood.

Seven Tips To Make Your Website Sound More Like You

1. Record Instead Of Write

The first tip I have for you is to record yourself instead of trying to write. You can use the voice recorder on your phone to record what you want to say on your website instead of writing.

This will help you write like you talk and the pressure of the blank screen won’t be there.

If you’ve already written the copy for your site, read it back aloud and see if it sounds like something you would say.

2. Pretend You’re Talking To A Friend

Another way to make your website sound more like you is to pretend you’re talking to a friend or a family member. How would you describe what you do to them?

Often, we tend to be more relaxed with people who know us and censor ourselves way less. So pretending like you’re talking to someone you know can help loosen up your copy and make it come across more naturally.

3. Create Your Brand Word Bank

Do you have words and phrases that you use regularly? If so, incorporate them into your website copy. While you’re at it, create a new blank document, call it your Brand Word Bank and put those words and phrases in there. This will help you stay consistent on your website, in your blog posts, emails, and on your social media profiles.

Can’t come up with anything? This is another area where you can turn to friends and family and ask them if they can point out words and phrases that have you written all over them.

You can also go through your messages, old emails, and notes to find those words and phrases and make them a part of your brand word bank.

4. Ask Your Friends For Help

I’ve said earlier to pretend like you’re talking to a friend while writing website copy. But you can take this a step further and ask your friends and family to take a look at your website and give you their honest feedback.

If they can recognize your voice in their head as they’re reading your website, you’ve done an excellent job. If not, you might have to go back to the drawing board.

5. Use A Conversational Tone

A conversational tone will connect with your audience and it will also make you more relatable. Here are a few tips to make your copy more conversational:

  • Use “you” and “your/yours” when addressing your ideal audience

  • Avoid using passive voice

  • Break up your copy and use short sentences

  • Use contractions: don’t, You’ll, won’t, etc.

  • It’s ok to start sentences with “And” or “But”

  • It’s also ok to end a sentence with prepositions

  • Incorporate slang (but don’t go overboard with it and don’t use slang that’s outdated or familiar only to a small group of people)

  • Ask questions — it makes your readers feel more engaged

  • Use examples and metaphors to paint a vivid picture in your reader’s mind

6. Avoid Jargon

Avoid using industry jargon on your website. For one, this will alienate your audience because they are not familiar with the official terms. Secondly, you’ll end up attracting your peers which aren’t going to buy from you.

For example, if I say that I’ll make sure your website uses the HTTPS protocol and I’ll add CSS and media queries that will further enhance your website; chances are you won’t know what I’m talking about.

But if I tell you that I’ll make your website more secure and make sure your website looks good on mobile devices, you’ll have an easier time understanding what I mean.

7. Stay Consistent

Finally, use a consistent tone of voice all over your online presence. This includes your website, your social media profiles, your emails, and every other piece of content you put out there.

Beyond the tone of voice, you’ll also want to use consistent imagery and the values you want to be known for. This consistency will help you build a business that people recognize and trust.

Final Thoughts

Making your website sound like you can feel like mission impossible. But, if you follow the tips above, you’ll have an easier time writing your website copy and making it sound natural.

Once you’ve nailed your copy, stay consistent across your website and all other social media channels so everything you write sounds more like you.

It also helps if you have a website that aligns with your business so the design feels like you too. That’s where our Squarespace templates come in. They make it super simple to create a website that looks and sounds like you.
